Finding One’s Self 2025 Remastered

Finding One’s Self, the 1994 debut album by Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, is a landmark in South African jazz, blending tradition and innovation with remarkable maturity. More than an introduction, it is a declaration—boldly fusing township grooves and indigenous jazz idioms with global jazz textures and new age influences.

The album features a stellar line-up of South Africa’s most accomplished musicians, including Fana Zulu on bass, Vusi Khumalo on drums, and McCoy Mrubata on saxophones. Molelekwa’s command of keyboard, synth, and grand piano provides both structure and spirit, steering each composition with clarity and emotional intelligence. Guitarist Louis Mhlanga and percussionist Bassie Mahlasela further enrich the sonic palette, while flugelhorn and trumpet contributions from Timothy Prince Lengoasa and Vivian Majola add brass warmth and texture.

Noteworthy tracks such as “Ntate Moholo” and “Wa Mpona” showcase Molelekwa’s ability to evoke depth and nostalgia without sacrificing technical precision. Jean Barker’s observation captures the essence: beneath the album’s soft surface lies genius—accessible to the casual listener, yet endlessly rewarding for the discerning ear.

Winning both “Best Traditional Jazz” and “Best Contemporary Jazz” at the 1996 SAMA/FNB Music Awards, Finding One’s Self remains a foundational recording in African jazz, celebrating the introspective brilliance of a visionary artist.
