Blaq Spirit ElectricMELT 1996-2010, Vol. 1

Moses Taiwa Molelekwa

BLAQ SPIRIT Vol. 1 is the first installment in a ten-part archival series celebrating the visionary remix culture nurtured by ElectricMELT, the electronic music extension of MELT 2000. This project revisits genre-defying reinterpretations of African-rooted World and Jazz recordings, originally commissioned between 1996 and 2010 to bridge continents and generations through sound.

The compilation features pioneering remixers such as Smith & Mighty, Roni Size, Soul II Soul, Frederic Galliano, and Ashley Beedle—each lending their distinct sonic identities to the work of legendary MELT 2000 artists like Madala Kunene, Busi Mhlongo, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Mabi Thobejane, and Smadj. From Madala Kunene’s “Ubombo” remix debut to Molelekwa’s electronic reinterpretations, each track reflects a deep cultural dialogue between traditional African music and global electronica.

Standout remixes include Galliano’s avant-garde take on Smadj, Beedle’s iconic rework of Molelekwa’s Genes & Spirits, and Culoe de Song’s emotive remix of “Webaba” by Busi Mhlongo. These tracks exemplify the enduring power of cross-cultural collaboration.

BLAQ SPIRIT reintroduces these groundbreaking remixes to a new generation, preserving a unique legacy that underscores Africa’s vital contribution to the global music narrative—then, now, and into the future.
