ABOUT MOSES TAIWA MOLELEKWA
“Moses Taiwa Molelekwa shaped a distinct sound on Wa Mpona and Genes and Spirits, reflecting a pivotal era in South African history marked by cultural rebirth. As apartheid came to an end, the spirit of the ‘new South Africa’ sparked widespread celebration and a renewed sense of national identity. As a result, and in response to the shifting cultural landscape, musicians—including Molelekwa—began deliberately exploring aesthetics that were both consciously and uniquely South African. This introspective shift led to the emergence of crossover genres and kwaito, which prioritized local expression and redefined post-apartheid musical narratives. Over time, these innovations laid the foundation for a new generation of artists. Today, the influence of Moses Taiwa Molelekwa resonates clearly in the deep house rhythms of leading South African musicians such as Black Coffee and Culoe De Song.” Inspired by a quote by Steffan Horowitz – The loss of “new” South African innocence.
